Why obtain a drone pilot certification?
Since 2019, Transport Canada has required certification for any drone weighing more than 250 grams. Flying without certification can lead to fines up to $15,000. Beyond the legal aspect, certification opens the doors to a lucrative professional market.
The 3 Transport Canada certification levels
Pilot Certificate – Basic Operations
This certificate is the entry point for any drone pilot. It allows flying in uncontrolled airspace, more than 30 meters from any person, keeping the drone within visual line of sight.
Requirements: be at least 14 years old and pass the Transport Canada online exam (65% score required).
Pilot Certificate – Advanced Operations
This level allows for more complex operations: flying in controlled airspace (near airports), within 30 meters of people, and over people with a certified drone.
Requirements: be at least 16 years old, pass the online advanced exam AND pass an in-person flight review.
Pilot Certificate – Complex Operations Level 1
New since November 4, 2025, this certificate is mandatory for BVLOS (beyond visual line of sight) operations. It allows for long-distance inspections, commercial mapping, and paid industrial missions between $150 and $500/hour.
Requirements: complete 20 hours of theoretical classroom training and pass a complex flight review.
